Beyoncé's Surprise Album Is a Phenomenon . . . and It's Selling Like Crazy
The iTunes exclusive "visual" album is selling for $15.99, and contains 14 tracks, which are not available individually until this Friday. It also includes 14 videos, with other bonus video content. It's unclear if or when it'll be released on CD.
Of course, in order to get these sales numbers in a case like this, word of mouth is EVERYTHING . . . and Beyoncé succeeded with that.
The "New York Daily News" reports that the album generated more than 1.2 million Tweets in just 12 hours, including a "Tweets per minute" spike of 5,300, which was roughly 300 more than "Sharknado" notched during its peak halfway through its original telecast.
Over the weekend, Beyoncé put out a video explaining that she wanted to unleash an album . . . as a surprise, with all the videos done . . . so that people could absorb it all at once.
She said, quote, "Now people only listen to a few seconds of a song on their iPods. They don't really invest [in] a whole album. It's all about the single and the hype . . .
"I wanted to make this body of work, and I feel like it's something that's lost in pop music. I wanted people to have a different first impression . . . not just listen to a 10-second clip, but to actually be able to see the whole vision of the album."
