Americans LOVE Mexican food. And not just Taco Bell, which isn't REALLY Mexican food, but sure feels like it during the digestive process.
Right now in the U.S., salsa outsells ketchup . . . tortillas outsell hamburger and hot dog buns . . . and tortilla chips outsell potato chips. On top of that, tequila sales are WAY up, and rice has become one of our most popular side dishes.
Not all of these are new developments. Salsa actually started outselling ketchup 20 years ago. But all of this points to a larger trend.
Sort of like how Italian food once stopped being 'ethnic' food and just became standard American food, the same thing is happening with Hispanic food.
A spokesman from the Tortilla Industry Association says, quote, "When you think about pizza and spaghetti, it's the same thing. People consider them American, not ethnic. It's the same with tortillas now."
